Rebecca

Based on Daphne du Maurier’s eponymous bestselling novel, adapted by thriller mastermind Alfred Hitchcock in 1940 as the equally fabulous movie version – his first and only movie ever awarded an Oscar.

A shy and naïve young girl falling in love with the worldly, elegant millionaire Maxim de Winter. A man with a troubled mind and a dark secret, obsessed by a shadow from the past – his late wife, Rebecca. A sinister yet charismatic female villain – the vicious Mrs. Danvers – , slyly pulling all the psychological strings the classic thriller genre has to offer. And a magnificent mansion by the seaside – the legendary de Winter family estate Manderley – as a backdrop, endangered by looming catastrophic events: REBECCA has all the ingredients of a classic Hollywood film noir, with one crucial difference: instead of the silver screen, this production by VBW has been created for the live stage.

Based on Daphne du Maurier’s eponymous bestselling novel, adapted by thriller mastermind Alfred Hitchcock in 1940 as the equally fabulous movie version – his first and only movie ever awarded an Oscar – REBECCA by VBW adheres closely to its legendary source, approved and warmly welcomed by no other than the du Maurier family themselves: hugely impressed by a performance of Michael Kunze’s and Sylvester Levay’s ELISABETH, Daphne du Maurier’s son, Christian Browning, gladly granted the rights for a musical version to VBW.

Faithful to its psychologically riveting template, REBECCA traces the fascinating transition of the story’s unnamed narrator from a shy, mousy and insecure newlywed to a strong and self-assured woman, overshadowed by the mysterious Rebecca, a menacing character only present in memories and imagination. A superb example of the new genre created by Michael Kunze – the drama musical – this new interpretation of a true classic combines a moving love story with the dark elements of a quintessential Hollywood thriller. The secret that hangs heavy over Manderley, the ancestral home of the de Winter family, and a tightly woven web of intrigues and plot twists keep the audience enthralled from curtain up to the final dénouement.

Christmas Markets Vienna

From mid-November until Christmas, Vienna's most beautiful squares are once again transformed into magical Christmas markets.

Vienna is this beautiful at Christmastime

From mid-November until Christmas, Vienna’s most beautiful squares are once again transformed into magical Christmas markets. The aroma of Christmas baking, hot punch and toasted almonds wafts through the air. The Old City and shopping streets are decorated with festive lights that spread the Christmas cheer in Vienna.

A tall arched gateway with candles welcomes visitors at the entrance to the Viennese Christmas Market on City Hall Square. The traditional Christmas Market offers Christmas gifts, Christmas tree decorations, handicrafts, culinary treats, confectionery, and warming drinks. At the Vienna Ice World at the Christmas Market, ice skaters can put on their skates and make rounds through the romantically illuminated City Hall Park. A special attraction for couples in love is the tree of hearts. For children, there is a Christmas World in the park with carousel, nativity scene trail, and its own skating ring.

Not far from here is the Christmas Village on Maria-Theresien-Platz, between the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna and the Naturhistorisches Museum Vienna. Over 70 booths offering traditional handicrafts and original gift ideas are set up here during Advent. The romantic Christmas Village on the University Campus is also a popular meeting point during the run-up to Christmas, especially for students. With a children’s railway and an old-fashioned carousel, the Christmas Market on the Campus is also a big hit with families. Two curling lanes are also available.

The Old Viennese Christmas Market on Freyung in the city center is committed to tradition. A Christmas market was held here as early as 1772; today, it is a place to buy handicrafts, glass decorations, traditional mangers and ceramics. Festive Advent music can be heard on the square from 4.00 pm. Top-quality handicrafts can also be purchased a couple of steps further along at the Am Hof Christmas Market. Christmas music and choral singing provide the perfect atmosphere.

Imperial flair in front of palaces

The Christmas Market in front of Schönbrunn Palace enchants with its imperial backdrop and is converted into a New Year’s market after Christmas. The atmospheric market offers traditional handicrafts, hand-made Christmas decorations, Christmas concerts and an extensive children’s program, including Christmas workshop. The Christmas Village at Belvedere Palace impresses visitors with its Baroque background. The unique palace park provides an ideal site for this tranquil Christmas market with elegant handicrafts and culinary delights. This year, the Advent market at Liechtenstein Garden Palace is being held for the second time and is still considered a secret tip for everyone seeking a quiet atmosphere.

Art Advent on Karlsplatz offers a diverse children’s program and above all handicrafts to buy. Further variety is provided by art installations, show workshops and live bands. All of the food on offer is organically certified. There are also numerous booths full of handicrafts in the idyllic tiny alleyways of the Biedermeier district at the Christmas Market on Spittelberg as well as numerous other vendors with unique culinary gift ideas.

Bruegel and his Time

Sensitively executed light-and-dark drawings, critical moral satires, portraits, and expansive landscapes.

Sensitively executed light-and-dark drawings, critical moral satires, portraits, and expansive landscapes: virtually no other European place or historical period witnessed such an astounding variety of drawn art as did the Netherlands during the 16th century.

It was with the utmost degree of technical virtuosity and with extraordinary inventiveness that the artists of this period depicted an everyday world in the throes of radical change in which the Reformation, the blossoming of colonial trade, and increasing urbanization led to a renegotiation of societal norms. In cartoons for the stained glass windows of imposing cathedrals and private residences, as well as in sketches for precious luxury objects, paintings, and printed graphics, the drawing found a wide range of practical application. Drawing also came to be regarded as a means of artistic expression in its own right, with well-heeled elites increasingly seeking out drawn works as collector’s items.

This exhibition at the ALBERTINA Museum presents around 90 works from the museum’s own holdings that exemplify this incomparable golden age of drawing. Alongside famed masterpieces by Jan de Beer, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, and Hendrick Goltzius, the selection will also feature works on paper that are now being prepared for presentation to a broader public for the first time. This project is being mounted with generous support from the Flemish Government.

The exibition last from 22.02. until 29.05.2023.
